Upper Austria is home to one of the most varied collections of Christmas markets in the country. From the baroque state capital Linz to medieval Steyr and the lakeside towns of the Salzkammergut, Lake Traunsee, the Wolfgangsee, Lake Mondsee and Hallstatt, the region turns festive between mid November and Christmas Eve. Add to that the award winning Wels Christmas World and the long running market in the historic castle courtyard of Freistadt, and Upper Austria offers a Christmas market for almost every taste. Dates and opening hours vary noticeably from place to place, so it is worth checking each market individually.

Linz: Christkindlmarkt on the Main Square and the Volksgarten Christmas Market
From November 21 to December 24, 2026, the baroque Hauptplatz in Linz turns into one of Upper Austria's best known Christkindlmarkt locations. Stalls selling handicrafts, tree ornaments and the famous Linzer Torte cluster around a grandly lit Christmas tree. A short walk away near the main train station lies the somewhat quieter Volksgarten Christmas market, known for its daily craft demonstrations and a hands on wood workshop area for families. On Advent weekends, a free hop on hop off Christmas train connects both locations along with several smaller markets around the city.
Steyr: Adventdorf on the Main Square
In the old town of Steyr, the Adventdorf am Stadtplatz opens from November 13 to December 24, 2026, gathered around the Leopoldi fountain. Blacksmith demonstrations and traditional brass music accompany appearances by the Steyr Christkind and the town's night watchmen, all set against a well preserved medieval backdrop.
Lake Traunsee Region: Gmunden Advent and the Traunkirchen Christmas Market
Two towns on Lake Traunsee host their own Advent events. In Gmunden, the Advent stroll through the historic town center runs across four weekends, from Friday, November 27, through Sunday, December 20, 2026, Friday to Sunday only, complemented by illuminated treetop walks at the Grünberg and winter boat trips on the lake. Wolfgangsee: Wolfgangseer Advent in St. Wolfgang
Around Lake Wolfgangsee, the Wolfgangseer Advent runs from November 20 to December 20, 2026, decorating the village with Christmas trees and life size nativity figures. The Schafbergbahn cog railway and boat trips on the lake also continue to operate during the season, making the area a popular day trip destination in winter.
Mondsee: Advent Market on the Church Square and in the Abbey Cloister
In front of the famous basilica known from the film "The Sound of Music", the Mondsee Advent market opens on November 27, 2026, with the program continuing across several Advent weekends into December. In the gothic cloister of the former abbey, around 35 craftspeople present their work, while Advent concerts and a dedicated children's program take place near the basilica. Hallstatt: Christkindlmarkt on the World Heritage Market Square
One of the shortest but most photographed Christmas markets in the region takes place on a single day. On Tuesday, December 8, 2026, the historic Marktplatz in the UNESCO World Heritage village of Hallstatt turns into a Christkindlmarkt from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm, right on the shore of Lake Hallstatt and surrounded by the mountains of the Salzkammergut.
Bad Ischl: Christkindlmarkt of the Ischl Craftspeople
In the former imperial spa town of Bad Ischl, the Christkindlmarkt of the Ischl craftspeople takes place from November 20 to December 20, 2026, inside the historic Trinkhalle, open Wednesday through Sunday plus an extra day on Tuesday, December 8. Visitors will find traditional handmade goods from the region alongside regional food in the adjoining Schmankerldorf.
Wels: Wels Christmas World, Named European City of Christmas 2026
Wels Christmas World opens from November 13 to December 24, 2026, in the city center and draws close to one million visitors each year, making it one of the largest Christmas markets in Upper Austria. Notably, Wels was named "European City of Christmas 2026" by the Christmas Cities Network in cooperation with the European Parliament, the first German speaking city ever to receive the title. Highlights include the 1.7 kilometer Wels light trail with around 750,000 LED lights, the mountain style Advent market on the main square, and a family area in Pollheimerpark.
Freistadt: Christkindlmarkt in the Historic Castle Courtyard
The long running Christkindlmarkt in the inner and outer castle courtyard of Freistadt takes place on the first weekend of December 2026, on December 5 and 6, Saturday from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. With more than 60 exhibitors, it ranks among the largest regional Christmas markets in Upper Austria, combining handicrafts with a lantern procession and a visit from Saint Nicholas.
