Weihnachtsmarkt Balve 2026, known locally as Adventszauber am Drostenhaus, takes place on 5 and 6 December around Drostenplatz in the town centre of Balve in the Sauerland. The Balve traders’ association (BalWer) organises this compact Christmas market. Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
Weihnachtsmarkt Balve is traditionally held on the second weekend of Advent. In 2026 that is Saturday 5 December and Sunday 6 December. In recent years the market opened on Saturday afternoon (typically from 14:00 or 15:00) and ran into the late evening, often until around 23:00. On Sunday the huts usually opened from 12:00; in 2025 the market day ended around 18:00, with local shops open for Sunday shopping from about 13:00 to 18:00. Exact opening hours for 2026 will be confirmed by the organiser closer to the weekend.
The programme is community-led rather than a large touring lineup. Typical acts include the Balve men’s choir, Musikverein Balve, the youth orchestra, Melodie Mellen, the Garbeck children’s choir and the Festspielverein. Sunday is the family day, with an official opening and often a visit from St Nicholas. An ice rink featured in some past editions but was not installed in 2025 and is not confirmed for 2026. - Take regional train RB54 (Hönnetal Railway) to Balve station; Drostenplatz is a short walk. Bus stop Balve Mitte is also within walking distance. By car, use the B229 into the Sauerland; the IBS car park often hosts market stalls, so use other town-centre parking nearby.
- December in the Hönne valley can be cold, wet or snowy. Wear warm, waterproof layers and sturdy shoes; most of the market is outdoors.
- Balve is a small town: book rooms in Balve or nearby Menden, Neuenrade and Iserlohn early for the Advent weekend.
- Sunday is the calmer family day with choirs, children’s acts and often St Nicholas; Saturday runs later into the evening.
