For more than fifty years, the historic Hauptmarkt in Großenhain, Saxony, has been transformed into a festive Christmas town throughout the Advent season. The market traditionally opens at the end of November for the first Advent weekend and runs daily until just before Christmas Eve, making it one of the longest-running and most family-friendly Christmas markets in the Meissen district. Around 40 lovingly decorated stalls surround the square against the backdrop of the imposing town hall tower, with free admission throughout the entire run.

The Großenhainer Weihnachtsmarkt opens for the first Advent weekend in late November and runs daily from 11:00 to 19:00 until just before Christmas. Exact 2026 dates will be announced by the city administration in autumn; in previous years the market ran for three to four full Advent weeks. Alongside the main market, the Kulturschloss Großenhain, the Marienkirche and the town museum host a complementary programme of concerts, theatre performances and readings. A highlight of the third Advent Sunday is the separate Palais-Weihnacht in the nearby village of Zabeltitz (see below).
Palais-Weihnacht Zabeltitz 2026 – Christmas Market in the Baroque Garden
On Sunday, 13 December 2026, the 26th Palais-Weihnacht takes place around the Palais Zabeltitz and its baroque garden, running from 11:00 to 18:00. Regional exhibitors offer Saxon handcrafts, jewellery, cosmetics and gift items in an intimate and picturesque setting far removed from the bustle of larger markets. Mulled wine, regional food specialities and a children's baking programme complete the experience, and Father Christmas makes an appearance to collect the last wish lists of the season.
