Welcome to the Hannover Christmas Market 2026 in Hanover

The Hannover Christmas Market 2026 turns the capital of Lower Saxony into one of northern Germany’s most atmospheric Advent settings from 23 November to 22 December. Around 190 stalls spread from the Gothic Marktkirche along Grupenstrasse, Holzmarkt and the Leine riverbank to Ballhofplatz; in parallel, the Roncalli Christmas Village on Ernst-August-Platz in front of the central station stays open until 30 December. Admission to every city-centre market is free, with typical hours daily from 11:00 to 21:00.

Hanover splits its Christmas season into clear themed zones: the traditional market at Marktkirche, a historic village on the Leine, a Finnish Christmas village at Ballhofplatz, the Wishing Well Forest at Holzmarkt, the Roncalli village at the station, the neighbourhood market on Lister Meile, and the walk-in Christmas pyramid at Kröpcke. Families, craft shoppers and evening strollers can each find their own mood – and walk between several markets in a single visit.

Hanover Old Town Christmas Market 2026

The Hanover Old Town Christmas Market 2026 is the city’s largest market. The city lists it from 23 November to 22 December 2026, daily 11:00 to 21:00. It starts at Platz der Weltausstellung, runs along Grupenstrasse to Marktkirche and continues to the Leine and Ballhofplatz. In 2025 the combined Old Town market had 188 stall units, 125 of them in the traditional section; a similar scale is expected in 2026.

Beside Marktkirche stands the great Nordmann fir from the Sauerland: about 19 metres high, 3.2 tonnes, some 3,000 bulbs and 1.5 kilometres of lights. Tree ornaments, smoking figures, wooden toys, stollen, sausage and mulled wine set the tone. Children find carousels, a small Ferris wheel, puppet theatre, a storyteller and Santa. Admission is free. Core address: Am Markte, 30159 Hanover.

Historic Christmas Village on the Leine 2026

The Historic Christmas Village on the Leine 2026 – also known as the Leine riverbank Christmas market – is the medieval wing of the Old Town market and shares its dates: 23 November to 22 December 2026, 11:00 to 21:00. Stalls run along Burgstrasse, Rossmuehle, Klostergang and Pferdestrasse and between the adult education centre and the river; 45 stall units were listed here in 2025.

In the craft lane, smiths, carvers and other trades work in public. Jesters, acrobats and walking acts fill the alleys; fire shows are part of the evening programme (18:00 and 20:00 in 2025; confirm on site for 2026). Between the Historical Museum, half-timbered houses and the river, this is the quieter, more historic alternative to the busy Marktkirche square – the place for sausage, punch and handmade goods in a medieval setting.

Finnish Christmas Village Hanover 2026

The Finnish Christmas Village Hanover 2026 sits on Ballhofplatz and belongs to the Old Town market (23 November to 22 December 2026, 11:00–21:00). It is small but distinctive: six stall units plus a Lapland tent were planned in 2025. Expect Finnish food such as flame-grilled salmon, glögi, Nordic sweets and selected Finnish crafts.

If you want a break from classic German mulled-wine steam, this is the Nordic pause: tent atmosphere, hot food and thinner crowds than at Marktkirche. Ballhofplatz is only a few minutes’ walk from Holzmarkt and the Historical Museum, so it pairs easily with the Wishing Well Forest and the Leine village.

Wishing Well Forest Hanover 2026

The Wishing Well Forest Hanover 2026 occupies Holzmarkt in front of Leibniz House and is open from 23 November to 22 December 2026. About 50 fir trees stand on roughly 400 square metres around the Oskar Winter fountain. Turning the golden wish ring is said to grant a wish – one of the market’s favourite photo spots.

Two forest huts serve food and drink in a quieter woodland setting. In 2025 this zone had two stall units plus the huts. Families with young children use it as a calm stop between Marktkirche and Ballhofplatz, away from the densest foot traffic.

Christmas Village at Hanover Central Station 2026

The Christmas Village at Hanover Central Station 2026 – officially Weihnachtsdorf Hannover on Ernst-August-Platz, run by Circus Theater Roncalli – is open from 23 November to 30 December 2026, daily 11:00 to 21:00. On 24 December it closes at 14:00; on 25 December it is shut. That makes it the longest-running major Christmas market in the centre and the best option between the holidays after the Old Town market has closed.

More than 50 huts in Lower Saxon half-timbered style stand in front of the historic station facade. At 17:00, 18:30 and 20:00 a light projection tells a Christmas story on the building. Further highlights: a historic Ferris wheel with views over the lit city, a VR reindeer sleigh, organic mulled wine and Roncalli’s restaurant-cafe. Address: Ernst-August-Platz, 30159 Hanover. Admission free; rides and food cost extra. Official site: https://weihnachtsdorf-hannover.de/

Lister Meile Christmas Market 2026

The Lister Meile Christmas Market 2026 traditionally follows the Old Town calendar and is scheduled for 23 November to 22 December 2026, daily 11:00 to 21:00. Confirm the final notice from the Lister Meile traders’ association shortly before opening. The market stretches several hundred metres along the pedestrian street in the List/Oststadt district (Lister Meile, 30161 Hanover).

Compared with the Old Town, handmade crafts and small makers take a larger share; sausage and mulled-wine stalls recede. Puppet theatre is a regular feature. Tram lines 3, 7 and 9 (Sedanstrasse/Lister Platz) stop at the market. After a crowded Old Town circuit, Lister Meile is the calmer, neighbourhood counterpoint.

Christmas Pyramid at Kröpcke 2026

The Christmas Pyramid at Kröpcke 2026 is less a full market than the unofficial emblem of festive downtown Hanover: an 18-metre walk-in pyramid in Ore Mountain style on the city’s central square. It links the walk from the station to Marktkirche. Mulled wine, punch and small snacks are served on the first floor, with views toward Bahnhofstrasse and the gateway at Platz der Weltausstellung.

Exact 2026/2027 dates had not been published at the time of writing. In 2025/2026 the pyramid stood from 24 November to 4 January (with shorter hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, and closed on 1 January). A similar window – late November 2026 into the first days of January 2027 – is likely. Check hannover.de and the pyramid’s own channels for final hours. Kröpcke, 30159 Hanover; main tram interchange.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

The Old Town market, including the historic village, Finnish village and Wishing Well Forest, runs continuously from 23 November to 22 December 2026, daily 11:00–21:00. The Roncalli Christmas Village extends the season to 30 December 2026 (Christmas Eve until 14:00, closed on Christmas Day). In the Old Town the night watch rings the close half an hour before shutdown.

The 2025 family programme – which the city of Hanover cites as a guide for 2026 – included a storyteller (15:30 and 16:30), puppet theatre (16:00, 17:00 and 18:00), Santa (17:30) and a Christmas bakery (11:00–19:00, 3-euro contribution). Walking acts roam the stalls. On the Leine, craft demos and fire shows fill the evening. At Ernst-August-Platz the facade projections at 17:00, 18:30 and 20:00 are the fixed highlight. Confirm 2026 children’s and show times with the city shortly before opening.

Tickets & Admission for Hannover Christmas Market Hanover

Admission to all listed Hanover Christmas markets in 2026 is free. There are no ground tickets. You pay only for food, drink, crafts and rides (carousels and the small Ferris wheel in the Old Town; historic Ferris wheel and VR sleigh at the station). The Christmas bakery charged 3 euros in 2025; mug deposits on mulled wine are standard and refunded on return.

Exact 2026 mulled-wine and ride prices are set at season start and vary by stall. Card payment is common but not universal – bring some cash. Roncalli’s restaurant-cafe at Ernst-August-Platz takes group bookings. Official information: hannover.de and weihnachtsdorf-hannover.de. A separate paid attraction in the city, not part of the free markets, is Christmas Garden at Hanover Adventure Zoo.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Hanover

  • Getting there: Hanover Central Station opens directly onto the Roncalli village. Walk to the Old Town via Bahnhofstrasse and Kröpcke, or take the tram to Kröpcke or Markthalle/Landtag. Lister Meile: tram lines 3, 7 and 9, Sedanstrasse stop. Use Altstadt and station car parks; public transport is clearly better in the centre.
  • Weather and clothing: Late November and December are damp and cold, often around freezing, with wind on open squares. Wear sturdy shoes, layers, hat and gloves; pack light rain protection.
  • Stay: Hotels around the station, Kröpcke and the Old Town fill up in Advent. Book early for Advent weekends and the 23 November 2026 opening. After 22 December, when only the station village remains, rooms often get cheaper.
  • Best time to visit: Weekday late afternoon from 16:00, when the lights are on and Saturday crowds have not arrived. After 22 December the Roncalli village until 30 December is the only large option in the centre.
  • Suggested walk: Ernst-August-Platz to the Kröpcke pyramid, on to Marktkirche, then the Wishing Well Forest, the Finnish village and the Leine – all on foot. Treat Lister Meile as a separate tram hop.
