The Wernigerode Christmas Market opens from 20 November to 22 December 2026 and transforms the historic Old Town with its colourful half-timbered houses and Wernigerode Castle in the background into a winter fairytale. On the market square, Breite Straße and Nicolaiplatz more than 60 traders and restaurateurs offer handicrafts, regional specialities and mulled wine in many varieties. Daily from 11:00 to 20:00 (Friday and Saturday until 21:00) a festive atmosphere with live music and attractions for the whole family awaits you.

The Wernigerode Christmas Market stretches across the central Old Town and offers a varied programme daily from 11:00 to 20:00 (on Fridays and Saturdays until 21:00). The stage in front of the town hall provides entertainment with live music and Christmas contributions. Admission is free and invites visitors to stroll comfortably between the colourful half-timbered houses. Especially in the evening the illumination of the Old Town and the castle unfolds its full effect.

Wernigerode Wintermarkt

From 25 December 2026 the Christmas market transitions seamlessly into the Wintermarkt. Stalls remain open on the market square and at the flower clock and provide winter atmosphere with live music and culinary offerings into January 2027. Visitors can therefore enjoy the special atmosphere between the holidays and over the New Year period.

Lichterzauber Schierke

In December 2026 the district of Schierke transforms into a festively illuminated light village. Historic buildings, the Mäuseklippen, the toboggan run and numerous other locations shine on the evenings (especially Fridays and Saturdays) in warm light. Accompanied by gastronomy, smaller events and a nativity scene in the spa park, the Lichterzauber offers a atmospheric addition to the Wernigerode market and invites winter evening walks in the Harz mountains.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Wernigerode

• Arrival by train to Wernigerode main station; the Old Town is reachable on foot or by city bus. By car, parking is available at Anger/Schloss, Katzenteich and the central multi-storey car park.
• Warm, weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes are essential in the Harz – it can be cold, windy and snowy.
• Book accommodation in the Old Town or with castle views early, as the Advent season is very popular.
