Welcome to the Wintermarkt Rüttenscheid 2026 in Essen
Wintermarkt Rüttenscheid 2026 returns for its 23rd edition to Rüttenscheider Stern in Essen. From 10 to 20 December the district market combines Advent atmosphere with the shopping street known as the “Rü”, local restaurants and a large marquee. Organised by the Interessengemeinschaft Rüttenscheid, admission is free. On Sunday 13 December a special open-Sunday shopping day runs in Rüttenscheid in parallel with the market, as approved by the City of Essen council.
Highlights & Attractions at Wintermarkt Rüttenscheid in Essen
- Around 18 wooden stalls with crafts, regional products, gift ideas and winter snacks at Rüttenscheider Stern.
- A large festival or gourmet tent with food and drinks from Rüttenscheid restaurateurs – past editions featured dishes such as game goulash, kale with sausage, currywurst, mulled wine and local Stauder beers.
- A carousel and a neighbourhood feel rather than a huge city-centre Christmas market – a district winter gathering in the heart of Rüttenscheid.
- Direct access to Rüttenscheider Straße (the “Rü”) with independent shops, boutiques and many restaurants within walking distance.
- Open Sunday on 13 December 2026: shops in Rüttenscheid open for Sunday trading (typically 13:00–18:00) while the market is on.
- Music and DJ evenings in the tent on selected days (Saturdays in the previous edition); the 2026 schedule will be confirmed by IG Rüttenscheid closer to the date.
- Charity stands and local workshops (e.g. Lichtblicke fundraising in previous years) alongside commercial stalls.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
The market runs from 10 to 20 December 2026. The fourth Sunday of Advent falls on 20 December – traditionally one of the busiest days around Rüttenscheider Stern. Day-by-day music, DJ and special-event details will be published by IG Rüttenscheid nearer the time on ruettenscheid.de.
As a guide from the 2025 edition: stalls typically opened about 11:00–21:00 on Friday–Sunday and 12:00–20:00 on Monday–Thursday; the food tent often opened later on weekdays and stayed open until about 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Times for 2026 may differ – check closer to your visit. Expect mulled wine and hot snacks outside, sit-down winter dishes in the tent, and a stroll along the lit Rü shopping street.
Tickets & Admission for Wintermarkt Rüttenscheid Essen
Wintermarkt Rüttenscheid is free to enter. There are no tickets and no admission fee for the market area at Rüttenscheider Stern. Food, drinks and goods at the stalls and in the tent are paid for on site. The open Sunday on 13 December concerns shop opening hours in Rüttenscheid, not market entry. For programme updates, follow IG Rüttenscheid (ruettenscheid.de) and City of Essen announcements.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Essen
- Getting there: The “Rüttenscheider Stern” stop (Ruhrbahn U-Bahn/tram and bus) is at the market. From Essen Hauptbahnhof, Rüttenscheid is only a few minutes away on U11, lines 101/107 or by bus. By car, parking is available in nearby streets and car parks but can be tight in Advent – public transport is usually easier.
- Weather and clothing: Mid-to-late December in Essen is cold, damp and often windy. Warm shoes, layers and gloves are essential; most of the market is outdoors, with the tent as shelter.
- Explore the district: Combine the market with a walk along the Rü – cafés, restaurants and independent shops sit right next door. On the open Sunday (13 December) a longer shopping tour is worthwhile.
- Food and drink: Expect classic winter-market food and drinks, much of it from local operators. Payment methods vary by stall – carrying some cash is sensible.
- Stay updated: 2026 opening hours, DJ nights and special events will be confirmed closer to December. Check ruettenscheid.de and essen.de before you go.
