Welcome to the Zermatt Christmas Magic 2026 in Zermatt

Zermatt does not host a classic large Christmas market with numerous stalls in 2026. Instead, the car-free mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn offers a unique Christmas magic: Bahnhofstrasse and Kirchplatz glow with festive lights, chalets and shops are lovingly decorated, and the clear mountain air carries the scent of hot chocolate, crêpes and mulled wine. Advent in Zermatt thrives on the authentic village atmosphere, views of the Matterhorn and small, atmospheric events.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Zermatt

  • Zermatt is car-free – arrive by train to Zermatt station (last stop of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn). Park in Täsch and continue with the shuttle train.
  • Warm winter clothing, sturdy shoes and layered outfits are essential – at 1,620 m it can be cold and windy, especially in the evening.
  • Book accommodation (chalets, hotels and apartments) early, as the Christmas period and New Year are among the most popular times.
  • Spend evenings especially on Kirchplatz and the Kirchbrücke – these often offer the finest views of the illuminated Matterhorn.
  • Combine a village stroll with a gondola ride or ski day and return at sunset to the festive Bahnhofstrasse.
