Since the year 1035, the Freimarkt has turned Bremen's Bürgerweide into what locals call the fifth season of the north each autumn. Over more than two weeks, the oldest and largest funfair in northern Germany draws millions of visitors from across the region.

  • Over 300 showmen and women set up stalls and rides across a fairground of roughly 100,000 square metres
  • Large beer tents such as Hansezelt, Bayernfesthalle and Almhütte, each with its own party and music program
  • A festive opening fireworks display on the first evening
  • The traditional Freimarkt parade through the Bremen city centre
  • The Historic Market around the town hall and the Liebfrauenkirche, plus the Kleiner Freimarkt on the market square

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

The Freimarkt runs for 17 days on the Bürgerweide and opens with a festive ceremony on the first afternoon, followed by fireworks in the evening. In the second week, the large parade winds through the city centre, while Halle 7 hosts a different themed party almost every night. At the same time, the Kleiner Freimarkt offers a quieter stroll among nostalgic carousels on the historic market square.

  • Drivers should allow extra time for finding parking given the large crowds
  • Evenings on the Bürgerweide can already feel autumn cool in October, so warm clothing is a good idea
  • Hotels in central Bremen should be booked early given how long the festival runs
