Welcome to the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos de Alcoy 2027 in Alcoy

The Cabalgata de Reyes Magos de Alcoy 2027 takes place on 5 January in Alcoy (Alicante province) and is widely recognised as the oldest continuously held Three Kings parade in Spain. It has run every year since 1885, with documented forerunners from 1866. The event is listed as a Festival of National Tourist Interest and as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Watching the parade in the streets is free of charge.

Highlights & Attractions at Cabalgata de Reyes Magos in Alcoy

  • Spain’s oldest continuous Three Kings parade – held since 1885, with roots documented from 1866.
  • Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar enter the city riding camels.
  • Signature feature: royal pages climb long ladders to balconies and windows to hand gifts directly to children.
  • Torchbearers (antorcheros) light the route; bands and traditional groups accompany the procession.
  • Climax on Plaça d’Espanya: Adoration of the Child Jesus with sparklers, fireworks and Handel’s Messiah.
  • More than 1,000 participants – pages, torchbearers, servants, escorts, floats and dancers.
  • Related traditions: Les Pastoretes (children’s shepherd parade), the Royal Proclamation / La Burreta on 4 January, and, in many years, the Royal Camp (Campamento Real) on the morning of 5 January.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027

The parade traditionally starts around 18:00 in the upper town (Avenida Elx / El Camí) and continues via Sant Nicolau to Plaça d’Espanya. Around 20:00 the kings dismount for the Adoration at the living nativity; fireworks follow, then the procession continues along Sant Llorenç to Avenida del País Valencià, ending around 22:00. In Alcoy, King Balthazar (“el Rei Negre”) rides in the centre of the royal group rather than at the end – a local custom.

On 4 January the royal ambassador announces the kings’ arrival in the Bando Real; children can post letters in the “Burretes” (donkey-borne letterboxes). On the morning of 5 January the Campamento Real at the Preventorio is often open to visitors (sometimes with limited places booked in advance). Exact 2027 timings and any changes are published by the Ayuntamiento de Alcoy on the official website closer to the date.

Tickets & Admission for Cabalgata de Reyes Magos de Alcoy

The street parade itself is free and open to the public – no ticket is required to watch the procession. Optional extras such as the Campamento Real visit (around 6 euro in recent years, often by prior registration or draw) or related cultural events (for example the Tirisiti puppet nativity) may carry a small fee. Check the official Ayuntamiento de Alcoy pages for the latest information and any booking links. Arrive early: the route and especially Plaça d’Espanya fill up quickly.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Alcoy

  • Getting there: Alcoy sits inland in Alicante province. By car via the A-7 / N-340 and local access roads; park on the outskirts and walk or use local transport into the historic centre. By bus or train via Alicante or Valencia, then on to Alcoy. Nearest major airport: Alicante-Elche (ALC).
  • Weather and clothing: Early January in Alcoy can be cold, windy and wet. Wear warm layers, sturdy shoes and a rain poncho. The parade is outdoors and lasts several hours.
  • Where to stay: Hotels and apartments in Alcoy and the surrounding area are in high demand over Epiphany – book early. Nearby towns in the l’Alcoià district are useful alternatives.
  • Best viewing: Strong views along El Camí, Sant Nicolau and especially Plaça d’Espanya for the Adoration. Balconies and windows on the route are often reserved by residents; respect private space.
  • Family-friendly: The event is designed for children and families. Gifts are delivered to children living along the route; visitors mainly experience the spectacle. For barriers, live broadcasts and safety rules, follow official city updates.
