Welcome to the Fiesta de las Cuadrillas de Barranda 2027 in Barranda

The Fiesta de las Cuadrillas de Barranda 2027 takes place from 29 to 31 January in Barranda, a district of Caravaca de la Cruz in the Region of Murcia. Declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest and an Asset of Cultural Interest, it is one of Spain’s longest-running traditional folk-music gatherings. Since 1979, cuadrillas — traditional music and dance groups — have turned the village streets and squares into an open-air stage. The main day is traditionally the last Sunday in January; in 2027 that falls on 31 January.

Highlights & Attractions at Fiesta de las Cuadrillas in Barranda

  • Free street performances by around a dozen to fifteen cuadrillas from Murcia and other parts of Spain.
  • Recognised as a Festivity of National Tourist Interest and Asset of Cultural Interest — among Spain’s leading folk-music events.
  • No formal festival site: groups play and dance in the streets and squares; the public is free to join in.
  • “Choques de cuadrillas” in the afternoon: pairs of groups perform at the same time, challenging and answering each other.
  • Morning often starts with a sung mass and official welcome of the groups; evening continues in the Salón Social with open dancing, improvisation and trovo singing into the night.
  • Side programme on the preceding days: workshops, talks on oral tradition and often Barranda Folk concerts (some may require a ticket).
  • Local hospitality: wine, simple snacks and regional food; tens of thousands of visitors on the main Sunday in a village of fewer than 900 residents.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027

The detailed 2027 programme will be published on the official website when confirmed. The usual pattern of recent years is Friday and Saturday with workshops, a study day on oral tradition, activities for children and evening concerts (including Barranda Folk); Sunday is the big day of the cuadrillas. On Sunday the celebration typically begins around 09:30 with a sung mass, followed by the formal reception of the groups. Through the morning and midday the cuadrillas play at fixed spots in the streets; after lunch come the “choques” on the main street, and in the evening open dancing in the Salón Social until late.

The 2027 line-up of cuadrillas has not been announced yet. Previous editions have welcomed groups from the Region of Murcia as well as Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, the Balearic Islands and elsewhere. The festival is organised by the Aguilanderos de Barranda. The Museo de Música Étnica in Barranda is worth a visit while you are there.

Tickets & Admission for Fiesta de las Cuadrillas Barranda

The street festival and the main Sunday of the cuadrillas are free — there is no ticket for the performances in the streets and squares. Some side events (for example certain Barranda Folk concerts or workshops) have been ticketed in previous years; prices and links will appear in due course on fiestadelascuadrillas.com. Optional ticket prices for 2027 are not yet known. Anyone coming only for the classic fiesta does not need a ticket.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Barranda

  • Getting there: Barranda sits in the northwest of Murcia, near Caravaca de la Cruz (postcode 30412). By car, follow regional roads toward Caravaca; parking in and around the village is limited on the main Sunday — arrive early. Public transport via Murcia or Caravaca; the nearest larger cities are Murcia and Lorca.
  • Weather and clothing: Late January in this inland, upland area can be cool, windy and wet. Warm layers, sturdy shoes and rain protection are wise; much of the day is spent outdoors in the streets.
  • Where to stay: Barranda itself has limited capacity. Book early in Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín or other towns in northwest Murcia — tens of thousands of people often come on the main Sunday.
  • On the day: Groups are spread around the village; choose your own route and dance with whichever formation you like. Wine and simple food are traditionally offered; cash and a little food of your own help.
  • Stay updated: Programme, list of cuadrillas and any concert tickets only via fiestadelascuadrillas.com and the organisers (Aguilanderos de Barranda). Consider combining the visit with the Museo de Música Étnica in Barranda.
