The Heidelberg Castle Illumination (Schlossbeleuchtung) is one of the most spectacular events on the Neckar river, drawing thousands of visitors to the old town each year. The castle ruins first glow in deep Bengal red, followed shortly after by a magnificent fireworks display launched from the Old Bridge over the river. The tradition goes back more than 400 years and commemorates two historic events: the destruction of the castle during the Nine Years' War (1689/1693) and the fireworks held in 1613 when Elector Friedrich V welcomed his bride, Elizabeth Stuart.

Program
The 2027 Castle Illumination takes place on two dates: 10 July and 4 September. As dusk falls, Bengal fire bathes the historic walls in a mysterious red glow, recalling the castle's earlier fires. Once the red light fades, the fireworks begin from the Old Bridge, turning the entire old town into a sea of color. The show usually starts around 10:15 PM and lasts about 15 to 20 minutes in total. Dates can shift due to weather, so it is worth checking the official website shortly before your visit.
Tickets
The Castle Illumination itself is free and open to the public; no ticket is required. For those who want a front row view of the fireworks, paid boat trips on the Neckar are available, some including an onboard dinner. These packages are offered through Heidelberg Marketing and tend to sell out early.

- Arrive early, as the best spots at the Old Bridge and along the Philosophers' Walk fill up quickly.
