Welcome to the Krampuslauf 2026 in Hallstatt

On December 4 and 5, 2026, the historic market square of Hallstatt becomes the stage for ancient alpine folklore. Right on the shore of Lake Hallstatt, within a UNESCO World Heritage village, the local Hirlatzer Teufel bring the legend of the Krampus back to life through the narrow lanes.

Highlights and Attractions at the Krampuslauf in Hallstatt

  • Two separate evenings, one children's run and one run for adults
  • Around 20 young and adult Krampus figures from the Hirlatzer Teufel group in hand carved wooden masks

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in Hallstatt

On Friday, December 4, the Children's Krampuslauf runs from 17:00 to 20:00. Young members of the Hirlatzer Teufel, aged 5 to 15, put on a show that is exciting yet deliberately kept gentle for younger visitors. On Saturday, December 5, the main Krampuslauf takes place, performed by the adult Hirlatzer Teufel. Bar service opens at 17:00, the show itself begins at 19:00, and St. Nicholas arrives at 20:00 to reward the good children.

Tickets and Admission for the Krampuslauf 2026

Admission is free on both event days. This is a public open air event on Hallstatt's market square, and no registration or ticket is required.

Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Hallstatt

  • Early December brings cold temperatures around Lake Hallstatt, so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended
  • Arriving by train or bus is advisable, since parking in Hallstatt is limited and not available directly at the market square
  • Arrive at the square well before showtime to get a good view of the spectacle
  • Accommodation in and around Hallstatt should be booked early given the village's small number of rooms
  • Families with young children are better off attending the gentler children's run on December 4, since the December 5 show is more intense
