Welcome to the Madeira Flower Festival 2027

From 29 April to 30 May 2027, Funchal once again celebrates the Madeira Flower Festival (Festa da Flor), one of Europe's best known spring festivals. Two weeks after Easter, the streets of Madeira's capital, especially Avenida Arriaga, turn into a sea of colour and fragrance; flower carpets, decorated floats and costumed dance groups fill the city for weeks.

Highlights

  • Children's Parade and the building of the "Wall of Hope" (Muro da Esperança) on 1 May
  • Grand Flower Parade (Cortejo Alegórico da Flor) held twice: on 2 and 16 May
  • Elaborate flower carpets throughout downtown Funchal
  • Palheiro Gardens Golf Classic on 30 April and 1 May
  • Vintage car and motorcycle parade along Avenida do Mar
  • Flower market with regional products and crafts
  • Exhibitions, folklore performances and concerts throughout the festival period

Program

The festival traditionally opens with the Children's Parade: thousands of children dressed in white walk from Avenida Arriaga to Praça do Município, each carrying a single flower. Together they build the "Wall of Hope", a tradition dating back to 1979 that symbolises peace; white doves are then released. The highlight of the festival is the Grand Flower Parade along Avenida do Mar; to give more visitors the chance to attend, it takes place on two Sundays this year, 2 and 16 May. The program is rounded out with flower exhibitions, craft markets and concerts across the city centre.

Tickets

Most of the program, including the Children's Parade, the Wall of Hope and the flower carpets, is free to attend; visitors simply need to arrive early enough to secure a good viewing spot along the route. Reserved grandstand seating for the Grand Flower Parade is sold separately and can be bought along the parade route or in advance.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early, as the best spots along Avenida do Mar fill up quickly.
  • Book accommodation in Funchal months in advance, since the festival is a major spring travel draw for Madeira.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as much of the program is best experienced on foot.
  • Several streets in the city centre close during the parades; watch for signposted detours.
  • Visit the flower carpets early in the morning for the best photos before crowds arrive.
