What Are the Maltese Festas?
The festas are the beating heart of Maltese culture: annual patron saint celebrations in which every village honours its protecting saint with several days of festivities. More than 80 festas take place every year across Malta and Gozo, most of them between May and October. In 2023, the Maltese festa tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. All festas are free to attend and typically run Thursday to Sunday, with the main feast day falling at the weekend.
Highlights of Every Festa
- Church decorations: The village church facade is covered in hundreds of light bulbs, damask hangings, flowers and silverware in an extraordinary display.
- Band marches (Marċi): Rival brass bands march through the streets in a tradition that is both passionate and centuries old.
- Fireworks (Logħob tan-Nar): Malta is internationally renowned for its pyrotechnic artistry. Morning shows (tal-ajru) are loud ground displays; evening shows (tal-lejl) deliver full aerial spectaculars.
- Procession: On the feast day, the patron saint's statue is carried through the streets on the shoulders of volunteers, accompanied by the brass band, clergy and parishioners.
- Street festivities: Food stalls, traditional sweets (Qagħaq tal-Għasel) and drinks line the decorated village lanes.
Key Festas in the 2026 Calendar
Two periods stand out in summer 2026. The weekend of 28–29 June, around the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, also brings L-Imnarja, Malta's oldest folk festival. The absolute peak of the season is 15 August (Santa Marija), a public holiday on which seven parishes celebrate simultaneously: Mosta under its famous Rotunda dome, Mqabba with internationally award-winning fireworks, and also Qrendi, Attard, Gudja, Għaxaq and Birkirkara. Since 15 August 2026 falls on a Saturday, crowds are expected to be among the largest in years. Early hotel and transport booking is strongly recommended.
Other festas particularly worth visiting:
- Mqabba – Our Lady of the Lily (3rd Sunday of June): home to world-class fireworks factories whose displays win international competitions.
- Ħaż-Żebbuġ – San Filippu (14 June 2026): colourful decorations hanging from every balcony.
- Lija – Transfiguration (6 August): a small village with an outsized fireworks reputation that draws enthusiasts from across both islands.
- Ħamrun – San Gejtanu (9 August): one of the island's most passionately celebrated festas, with intense rivalry between the band clubs.
- Senglea (8 September): celebrated alongside Victory Day and the Grand Harbour Regatta.
Gozo: Festas on the Sister Island
Around 20 festas take place on Gozo each year, often described as more community-centred and intimate than those on the main island. The 2026 season opens on 24 May in Għajnsielem (St Anthony of Padua), followed by Għasri on 7 June and Fontana on 14 June. The Gozo ferry crossing on a festa weekend is itself part of the experience.
Admission & Tickets
All festas are completely free to attend. No entry fees are charged for street celebrations, processions or fireworks. Individual indoor events held during festa week (concerts, band club sessions) may have their own ticket prices.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive at least one hour before the procession; streets fill up very quickly, especially in popular villages.
- Use public buses (Tallinja card); village centres are closed to traffic during festas and parking is virtually impossible.
- Bring earplugs: the morning fireworks (tal-ajru) are ground displays and extremely loud.
- Cover shoulders and knees when entering the church.
- Position yourself at dusk for the best photographs, when the church lights glow against the evening sky.
- For the Santa Marija weekend in August, book accommodation several months in advance.
