Europe's Most Spectacular Fireworks Return in 2027
Every April, the Malta International Fireworks Festival transforms the Grand Harbour of Valletta into one of the most breathtaking backdrops in the world. Over several evenings, hundreds of fireworks light up the night sky, painting the historic harbour panorama in an explosion of colour, light and music. The 26th edition of the festival is expected to take place in late April 2027. Exact dates will be announced by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority in due course.
History and Tradition
Founded in 2003, the festival has grown into one of Europe's most important pyrotechnics events. Malta's passion for fireworks dates back to the era of the Knights of St John, and more than 35 local fireworks factories continue to practise this craft today. The festival combines centuries of tradition with modern pyrotechnics and an international competition format to create a truly unforgettable experience.

Program and Locations
The festival spans several evenings across multiple locations. The main stage is the Grand Harbour in Valletta, where two competition nights see the best local and international teams compete against each other. One evening traditionally takes place in Nadur on Gozo. The grand finale, including the award ceremony, returns to the Grand Harbour. Shows typically begin from 8:30 PM onwards. All public viewing areas are free of charge.

- Upper Barrakka Gardens (Valletta): most popular spot; arrive early to secure a place
- Valletta Waterfront / Ta' Liesse: close to the action with excellent views
- Sliema Waterfront: more relaxed atmosphere with a panoramic view across the harbour
- Gardjola Gardens (Senglea): historic viewpoint from the opposite side of the harbour
- Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua: the Three Cities offer quieter alternatives with a direct view of the Grand Harbour
Entry & Tickets
Admission to all public viewing areas is free of charge. Limited tickets for premium areas such as Fort St. Angelo are usually offered by Heritage Malta and tend to sell out quickly due to restricted capacity. Details of premium ticket sales are announced through official channels in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive early: popular spots such as the Upper Barrakka Gardens fill up quickly.
- Use public transport; parking in Valletta is very limited during the festival.
- Book your hotel well in advance as Valletta accommodations sell out fast.
- Bring a light jacket as April evenings in Malta can be cool.
