Welcome to the Wittenberg Reformation Festival 2026
According to tradition, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses against the sale of indulgences to the door of Wittenberg's Castle Church on 31 October 1517; this date marks the beginning of the Reformation. On Reformation Day, 31 October 2026 (a Saturday), the historic old town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg once again turns into a lively stage with a historic market, festive church services, concerts and a memorable lantern parade around the world famous Theses Door.

Program
The historic market runs on 31 October from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM around the Marktplatz, the Schlossplatz with its Theses Door, the Cranachhof and the Bunkerberg, where the 95 Theses can be heard read aloud by local residents as part of the "Wittenberger Klangthesen" sound installation. Families can make lanterns for free at the Arsenal Wittenberg before the grand lantern parade sets off at 5:00 PM from Luther's House through the old town to the Schlosswiese. At the same time, churches across the city, including the Castle Church with the Theses Door, host festive services and concerts.
Tickets
Access to the historic market, the lantern parade and most program points is free. Visiting the Castle Church and its Theses Door requires a preservation fee of 5 euros (3.50 euros reduced), with group sizes limited to 20 people for the tower climb. Individual special events such as church services and concerts may have separate conditions.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive early, as the old town gets very busy on Reformation Day.
- Bring warm clothing for the evening and the lantern parade.
- Bring your own lantern or make one in time at the Arsenal Wittenberg.
- The Castle Church and Luther's House are within easy walking distance in the old town.
- Use parking on the outskirts, as the old town is traffic calmed for the festival day.
